How to Be an Effective Affiliate Marketer?
As an affiliate marketer it is so tempting to present the hard-sell. I've been guilty of it myself.
However, it's not your role to sell. Your role is to pre-sell and let the vendor's website do the selling.
As an aside, this is why it's important you promote products which sell well and have websites that convert well.
An affiliate refers and suggests. Think of your role in the following way.
Suppose you have a mechanic you've been using for years. You trust this mechanic and you've always received value for money. More importantly, they do what you pay them to do - that is keep your vehicle on the road and maintain vehicle safety.
When a friend or colleague asks you about a mechanic, you'll naturally suggest your mechanic. You might even mention a few reasons why you like your mechanic such as you trust them, the guarantee, and most importantly, your vehicle gets fixed properly with no problems.
The important aspect here is that in your mindset you don't care if your friend hires your mechanic. You're simply trying to help your friend; in fact, and this is important, you're intention more about helping your friend than garner more business for your mechanic.
Your helpful mindset is not one of selling, but simply sharing helpful information. This is the mindset you need to have as an affiliate marketer.
This is why product reviews, when done right, can be effective. By being done right, you're merely objectively presenting the facts and/or your experience. You're not selling. You're informing.
Seriously, and this is hard to do, when you write your pre-selling content, have the mindset you want to help your readers find the right product for them. Sure, you might suggest more than one product, but then explain the differences. The fact is not everyone needs the same product in a product-line. Product A may be right for one person while product B is right for another person.
When you have the mindset of helping people get what they want, you won't be selling, but merely suggesting a solution. The distinction is subtle, but important.
Go so far as to not think about the commissions you'll earn. Get that out of your head when writing pre-selling articles and product reviews. Instead, put your full attention to helping your readers. Your readers are your friends and you want them to get the right solution for their needs.
Tip for pre-selling rather than selling
Have an objective tone to your pre-selling article. Avoid hype. Present the facts. Include your personal experience and state it's your experience only. You can certainly talk about how a particular product helped you, but avoid focusing on how the product will help the reader. Instead, remain objective about what the product does and the benefits it offers... especially the benefits it provided you.
If you write reviews or publish a full product review site, your aim with your product review websites is...
to help your readers make a buying decision by providing objective information. You make it easy for them to follow-through with your affiliate links for them to click. That's it. You don't expect that they'll be 100 percent sold when clicking. The vendor's site must seal the deal. You need merely suggest, direct, and help readers find a solution.
Try writing your next review or article with the mindset of helping. Pretend your reader is asking you to suggest a product or service. Write as if you're responding to that request with no thought of the commission. After all, when you refer people to your mechanic, you're not getting a commission. You're simply being helpful.
