Dolce and Gabbana was started by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Dolce was born in 1958 near Palermo, Sicily and Gabbana was born in 1962 in Milan. The company was started with Dolce and Gabbana as a couple but they separated in 2005, continuing to be friends the business still thrives to this day.

The brand has a strong presence in any fashion show and thanks to their ambitious ad campaigns and celebrity friends they are seen across the world. Kylie Minogue, Naomi Campbell, Alexandra Burke and Madonna are just a few celebrities that can be seen promoting the Dolce and Gabbana ranges. The success has been significant and they are one of the biggest and most well known fashion brands in the world.

By 1997 the company reported a turnover of 400 million and both designers announced that they were going to retire by the age of 40. However they didn't keep the promise and by 2005 the turnover and grown to nearly 600 million and the Dolce and Gabbana range is always in demand.

The company are well known for creating controversial advertising campaigns and have come under scrutiny a number of times. In January 2007 the British advertising watchdog Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned a campaign that featured Dolce and Gabbana models brandishing knives.

In February 2007 Spain, Italy and France all banned an ad that was seen as illegal and humiliating to women. The company had released a campaign featuring a male model holding down a woman by her wrists as other men looked on, prompting a number of advertising authorities to force the brand to pull down their ads.

Dolce and Gabbana are known for their iconic 'DG' logo but the company has never been able to secure the DG.com domain name. It was originally registered by a company called "Data General" and later by the US variety store Dollar General.
