Business Insurance - What Is It and Why You Need It

by Matt Greene

Every business requires some form of business insurance. Insurance can be invaluable to your business and can protect you and your major assets against all sorts of things, such as liability claims, fire, theft or any other unexpected disasters or risks involved in business. It can help protect you and any employees from compensation claims and give you peace of mind too.

The very existence of business insurance could, in face, save you money. Should something unexpected happen, you have the insurance to cover it, which means you can run your business in a more effective manner.

There are many types of business insurance available, so you will have to do your homework to find the appropriate policy for your business type. In essence, though, business insurance sub-divides into three distinct categoires: Content, Liabilities and Property.

Some business insurance is compulsory, while some is at your discretion. It all depends on the sort of business you have. For example, a business that has employees must have Employers Liability Insurance to cover you against claims from employees who have injured themselves at work.

Also, if your business involves the public - ie: customers or client visits - then Public Liability Insurance is a must have. This will cover you against claims made against your company by customer or clients who have suffered property damage or injury when dealing with your business.

You may insure yourself and your business against any many of potential problems, from vehicles you own or rent, the building your office is in, income protection. It is a very big list. However, it is definitely best practice to seek professional advice from the outset.

Of course it is up to you whether or not you choose to take out insurance, but be warned, you could face a hefty penalty and risk losing your business altogether should you not. By making sure you get the correct cover for your business you will be able to sleep soundly at night!
